Strategy behind Letters to the Editor
readers need to know why the topic is important to the writer - why you feel strongly about the issue
combine some facts, and possibly emotions, if possible
Key Tips on Format:
opening sentence (very important)
explain why the topic is important
keep it brief
include your name and why you care about the topic, as newspapers might contact you for questions
papers will print well-written, articulate letters that present a point of view on the issue
Key Tips on Framing a Letter to the Editor
keep it on one message point - what are you trying to communicate and why?
keep 3-4 paragraphs and around 250-300 words
can use personal stories - why the topic impacts your family or friends
send letter via email, so a mailed letter doesn’t have to be typed into the newspaper’s computer
clearly state your name, address, and phone number at the bottom of the email. An editor may want to confirm content with the writer or ask a follow-up question.
